Starring: Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, Tommy Lee Jones, Hugo Weaving

Considered by many to be the original superhero, Captain America: The First Avenger follows the story of weedy weakling Steve Rogers (Evans) who, after being deemed unfit for military service, volunteers to participate in an experimental programme that turns him into a super soldier.

As Captain America, Rogers joins forces with Bucky Barnes (Stan) and Peggy Carter (Atwell) to wage war on the nefarious HYDRA organisation, led by the villainous Red Skull (Weaving).

Set in the early 1940’s, the film is a combination of period war drama and superhero fantasy and although it starts slowly, once Steve Rogers turns into Captain America it picks up a lot of momentum to become thrilling, exciting, suspenseful and fun.

Tightly scripted with explosive action scenes and jaw-dropping special effects, perhaps the best thing about Captain America is the casting and performances. Chris Evans makes for a very charismatic and appealing star-spangled superhero that is worth rooting for, while Hugo Weaving is fantastically over the top in his portrayal of Red Skull.

Do you need a top-notch comic-book movie to stop this summer’s march of mediocre superheroes? “Captain America: The First Avenger,” reporting for duty.
