Port of call

There’s been a bit of an empty hole for lovers of pub grub and a cosy atmosphere in the Al Wahda area. Well want no more, Porters Pub at the Grand Millennium Al Wahda has arrived and it’s just the spot for a casual night of comfort food and live music.

Heading down the wooden staircase, we pass a bright red telephone box, a nice touch in this otherwise very traditional-looking English pub.

The space is on two levels, with dining upstairs and a combined dining and bar area below. The low ceilings on the ground floor add to the cosy feel and we also notice a stage area – live music!

There’s a lot to choose from on the Porters menu, from tacos and garlic fries to the ever-popular fish’n’chips so beloved of the Capital’s expat community.

We decide to try the garlic fries, but then we spy something a bit different. It’s called the Ossum Blossom and we’re told it’s a mainstay on menus in the US. Always up for something new, we add the Ossum Blossom to our order.

After what seems like only a moment or two our food arrives, piping hot and ready for the tasting.

The garlic fries are delicious and crispy, with the perfect balance between the garlic and the crunchy chips. All the flavour but without the garlic breath! The Ossum Blossom however, is the star of the show. A delicious flower of battered onion with a tasty sauce for dipping, we’re hooked!

Soon the band strikes up and they don’t disappoint. A good mix of the old and the new, the assembled crowd is soon tapping their toes to the beat.

The laid-back vibe and snappy live music at Porters could well make this new venue a home-away-from-home.
