Unstoppable

All aboard

unstoppable

Director: Tony Scott
Starring: Denzel Washington, Chris Pine, Rosario Dawson

Veteran engineer Frank (Washington) and rookie train conductor Will (Pine) find out that an unmanned runaway locomotive is carrying carloads of poisonous gas and combustible liquids capable of destroying an entire city. They also learn that the locomotive is heading to Will’s small hometown in Pennsylvania, where his wife and daughter live. To save them and the city, they need to catch up with the runaway train and stop it before it reaches the town and wipes it out.

Tony Scott, director of such macho staples as Top Gun, Days of Thunder and The Last Boy Scout, certainly knows his way around an action movie and with this runaway train movie he’s definitely on the right track (sorry).

Denzel Washington is back on top form and really delivers the goods (again, sorry), as does Chris Pine, better known for his role as Captain Kirk in the last Star Trek, who also puts in a good turn to ensure the movie doesn’t come off the rails (last one, we promise).

Big, dumb, and loud, Unstoppable is a marvellous popcorn thriller, crafted in an almost passé style that recalls Scott’s more electrifying, white-knuckle efforts from the past. It’s not going to win any awards but it is ridiculously good fun. Popcorn, yes – but good popcorn.
