Paul

Close encounters of the funny kind

paul

Director: Greg Mottola,
Starring: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Seth Rogen, Jason Bateman

For the past 60 years, an alien named Paul (Rogen) has been hanging out at a top-secret military base. When he outlives his usefulness to the US government, the wisecracking extra-terrestrial decides to jump ship and hop on the first vehicle out of town – a rented RV conveniently piloted by pasty Brit road trippers Graeme (Pegg) and Clive (Frost).

Chased by bumbling G-men and the fanatical father of a woman that they accidentally kidnap, the duo hatch a fumbling plan to return Paul to his planet.

Directed by Superbad’s Greg Mottola, Paul reunites the perfectly matched Simon Pegg and Nick Frost for their first American project and also marks the first film they have made without the talented Edgar Wright behind the camera.

Where the fantastic Shaun Of The Dead took on horror and Hot Fuzz took the mickey out of 80s action movies, Paul is more of a gentle spoof that pays homage to the early films of Steven Spielberg – in particular Close Encounters Of The Third Kind and ET.

A celebration of sci-fi flicks, comic book geekiness and good, old-fashioned bromance, Paul is a thoroughly enjoyable and easy to follow road trip. It might not be Shaun, but it’s still a whole lot of fun.
