Winnie The Pooh

Oh Pooh!

winniethepooh

Director: Stephen J. Anderson
Starring: Jim Cummings, John Cleese, Craig Ferguson, Bud Lucky

The bear of very little brain returns for his first big screen outing in over 35 years.

Weaving seven classic AA Milne stories into one feature-length yarn, the film pivots around the mystery of Eeyore’s missing tail. With a pot of honey as the reward for the best make-shift replacement, Pooh and friends try everything – from an umbrella to a cuckoo clock – to pin the tail back on the donkey.

Fortunately, Disney has resisted the urge to bring Winnie into the 21st Century and the film has a beautifully authentic feel, staying faithful to the original watercolour drawings with no 3D special effects anywhere to be seen.

The voices are also excellent, with Jim Cummings perfect as the bumbling Pooh, and the characters are as endearing as ever, although Eeyore is almost too much of a misery guts.

At just over an hour long, perhaps it doesn’t represent the best value in movie-going money but Disney has tried to compensate for this with the addition of two amusing and very different animated shorts.

In the end, the movie is very much like the loveable bear himself – short and sweet. Our affection for Winnie hasn’t diminished with time and this delightful animated feature is sure to charm a whole new generation of fans.
