Leah Lane moved to Abu Dhabi three years ago from Newfoundland, Canada. She works as a college instructor and is thoroughly enjoying this new chapter in her life. We asked her what she likes best about the city and here’s what she had to say
The multiculturalism
I feel so lucky to live in a place where my regular social circle includes good friends from all over the world. Socialising with new friends from England, Ireland, Australia, Pakistan, Eastern Europe and various Arab countries brings so much interesting banter (not to mention food!) to the table.
Entertainment options
There is always something to do here – day and night. I really love being able to dine outside for so much of the year at top quality venues and also especially enjoy the world-class concerts and cultural events that are regularly offered here. I’m never bored!!
Affordable, convenient living
It’s the little things that really make a big difference in your life and here, small mundane chores can vanish at very reasonable prices. Neighbourhood amenities such as laundry services, corner shop deliveries and cheap taxis have made my life convenient beyond anything I have ever known before.
Sand and sea
It’s not only the man-made conveniences that make life great. I think it’s important to step back every now and then to really appreciate our home base. We sometimes take for granted the magnificent hues of the desert dunes, and the rich, inviting colour of the sea.
The weather
I know that might sound crazy as we are in the unbearably hot season, but coming from an island in the middle of the North Atlantic, where fog, wind and icebergs is the norm - I appreciate the eight to nine months of pleasurable weather we get here. I always suspected I was meant to be born in a warm climate – and now living in Abu Dhabi has convinced me of it.
