Atlantis Dubai Ends Use of Plastic Water Bottles

In a major stride toward environmental responsibility, Atlantis Dubai has officially eliminated all single-use plastic water bottles across its entire destination, marking the fourth anniversary of its Atlantis Atlas Project with a significant sustainability milestone.

The initiative, launched in 2021, is the resort’s long-term environmental commitment, built around four core pillars: Responsible Operations, Conservation & Animal Welfare, Education & Awareness, and People & Culture. The complete phase-out of plastic water bottles has led to the elimination of approximately 3.7 million bottles annually.

Key to this achievement was the installation of 18 filtered, chilled water dispensers across guest-facing areas including pools, beaches, and Aquaventure World, ensuring free, refillable water access for visitors and staff. Additionally, an on-site bottling plant, operational since 2022, now produces nearly 5,000 litres of filtered water daily, packaged in reusable glass bottles and distributed to guest rooms, restaurants, event spaces, and banquet areas.

Sustainability Beyond Bottles

Atlantis Dubai’s sustainability progress extends far beyond plastic reduction. Through its partnership with UAE-based Seafood Souq, the resort now traces 100% of its contracted seafood, including feed for over 65,000 marine animals, using blockchain-based Trace technology—strengthening supply chain transparency and responsible sourcing.

According to Kelly Timmins, Executive Director of Sustainability and Marine Animal Operations at Atlantis Dubai:

“Over the past four years, sustainability has become an integral part of every facet of our operations. From procurement to guest experience, we are integrating responsible practices that drive meaningful impact across our entire business through the Atlantis Atlas Project.”

Notable Environmental Achievements

  • Solar panels, installed in December 2022, have helped avoid 1,748 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions, comparable to the carbon sequestration of nearly 36,000 trees.
  • Winnow food waste technology, implemented in multiple restaurants, has cut edible food waste by an average of 53.8%.
  • Through the ‘Save The Butts’ campaign with Goumbook, over 4.6 million cigarette butts have been collected and recycled into building materials.
  • In collaboration with UNISOAP UAE, discarded guest soap is recycled and redistributed to vulnerable communities, with 579.83 kg processed since October 2023.

The resort has also maintained a strong record in certified environmental performance, with Atlantis, The Palm and Aquaventure World receiving EarthCheck Gold Certification, and Atlantis The Royal earning Silver Certification within its first year of operations.

Marine Conservation Commitment

In the past year alone, Atlantis Dubai released three Honeycomb Stingrays and 20 Arabian Carpet sharks into the Arabian Gulf, bringing the resort’s total releases since 2019 to 58 sharks and 10 rays—part of its broader marine conservation effort.

With its continuous progress and transparent reporting, the Atlantis Atlas Project continues to serve as a regional benchmark for sustainable tourism and corporate environmental responsibility.
