Canon Inc. has announced that three of its specialized RF dual fisheye lenses for 3D VR video will soon be compatible with Apple’s Vision Pro spatial computer, reinforcing a growing collaboration between Canon and Apple in immersive content creation.

Canon’s RF5.2mm F2.8 L DUAL FISHEYE and RF-S3.9mm F3.5 STM DUAL FISHEYE lenses will support Apple’s newly introduced Apple Projected Media Profile (APMP), a QuickTime movie format designed for spatial video playback on the Apple Vision Pro. These lenses are part of Canon’s EOS VR System, which launched in 2021 to serve the evolving needs of content creators working in VR for entertainment, tourism, and education.

The announcement coincides with Apple’s unveiling of visionOS 26 at the 2025 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). The update, due later this year, enables native APMP playback on Vision Pro, meaning content shot with Canon’s lenses can be converted via the EOS VR Utility and seamlessly viewed on Apple’s headset.

Expansion into Spatial Photo

In parallel, Canon confirmed that its RF-S7.8mm F4 STM DUAL lens, released in November 2024, will gain “spatial photo” support, bringing immersive still imagery into the mix. This adds to its existing compatibility with spatial video, enhancing creative possibilities for users aiming to deliver depth-rich visuals.

Canon’s EOS R7 and EOS R50 V mirrorless cameras will support this functionality via the EOS VR Utility, while the original EOS R50 will become compatible in mid-July 2025 following a firmware update.

Deepening Apple Collaboration

Canon emphasized that these developments are part of a broader strategy to strengthen the EOS VR System and collaborate with Apple to empower professional users and visual storytellers. By aligning its optical technologies with Apple’s advanced spatial computing platform, Canon is helping to push the boundaries of immersive content production.

The compatibility with APMP and spatial formats positions Canon as a leading player in the emerging 3D and XR video ecosystem, allowing creators to produce high-fidelity VR and spatial content with seamless integration into Apple’s growing mixed-reality hardware and software environment.
