Nissan has revealed the next generation of its e-POWER system, marking a major milestone in the company’s push toward electrified mobility. Nearly a decade since the original global debut, the new e-POWER promises improved fuel efficiency, reduced emissions, and a driving experience that’s even closer to a fully electric vehicle—without the need to plug in.
Set to debut in the Qashqai from September 2025, the new e-POWER system has been completely re-engineered, combining Nissan’s expertise in electric motor systems with real-world insights from European drivers.
At the heart of e-POWER is a distinctive setup: the petrol engine doesn’t drive the wheels. Instead, it generates electricity to power a fully electric motor that moves the vehicle, delivering the smooth and silent drive of an EV, but with the range and refuelling convenience of an internal combustion engine.
This differentiates e-POWER from traditional hybrids, which blend electric and combustion power to drive the wheels. Without a gearbox or power lag, acceleration is instant, and regenerative braking captures energy to recharge the battery.
The new system centres around a lightweight, compact 5-in-1 powertrain—integrating the electric motor, generator, inverter, reducer, and increaser. Nissan says this integration leads to class-leading fuel economy, performance, and refinement.
“We’ve re-engineered the system to deliver maximum efficiency, lower emissions and a quieter, more refined drive,” said David Moss, Senior Vice President of R&D for Nissan AMIEO (Africa, Middle East, India, Europe & Oceania). “New e-POWER now offers best-in-class fuel efficiency and emissions.”
In a market where many drivers are still unsure about making the switch to fully electric vehicles—citing concerns over charging, infrastructure, and range—Nissan’s e-POWER offers a transitional solution.
“It’s built for drivers who want something better, but not something unfamiliar,” said Clíodhna Lyons, Region Vice President for Product & Services Planning. “It delivers everyday electric driving with none of the friction.”
With no plug-in required, e-POWER allows drivers to enjoy the quiet and smooth ride of electric propulsion while refuelling at traditional petrol stations. Nissan believes this makes e-POWER an ideal bridge to full electrification, particularly for customers not yet ready to commit to battery electric vehicles.
Beyond the powertrain, the new Qashqai will also introduce enhanced driver-assistance features, including an improved ProPILOT system offering multi-lane autonomous drive support and better environmental awareness.
Nissan is also lowering ownership costs, extending service intervals from 15,000 km to 20,000 km.
Manufactured at Nissan’s Sunderland plant in the UK, the new Qashqai with e-POWER will be available in European markets from September 2025, reinforcing Nissan’s strategy to make electrified driving more accessible, efficient, and user-friendly.
