Thales has achieved a key milestone in the rapidly expanding Internet of Things (IoT) landscape by earning the GSMA Security Assurance (eSA) certification for its latest eSIM solution, designed to comply with the SGP.32 IoT standard.

With over 5.8 billion IoT cellular connections projected globally by 2030 (according to GSMA Intelligence), the need for secure, scalable and easily deployable connectivity has become critical. Thales’ newly certified solution is tailored to meet these demands, enabling seamless remote activation of eSIM-enabled IoT devices — without the need for physical SIM cards or smartphone intermediaries.

The SGP.32 standard, developed by GSMA, introduces a next-generation eSIM framework that allows devices such as smartwatches, medical sensors, asset trackers, and connected vehicles to download and activate mobile subscriptions independently. This marks a major step forward in simplifying deployments while enhancing end-to-end security.

Key Benefits of Thales’ GSMA-Certified eSIM for IoT:

  • Operational Efficiency: The certification supports mass remote activation, eliminating the need for manual SIM handling and reducing logistics and field interventions.
  • Security by Design: The solution provides robust protection of credentials and connectivity data across the full device lifecycle.
  • User Trust & Privacy: Enhanced security protocols ensure device identity integrity, making it ideal for sensitive use cases like medical devices, smart meters, or surveillance systems.

Eva Rudin, VP of Mobile Connectivity Solutions at Thales, said:

“In an IoT world that’s growing fast and moving even faster, trust and simplicity are key. With this certification, Thales continues to pave the way for secure, large-scale deployments of connected devices that are easy to manage and future-ready. It’s about removing friction, increasing security, and enabling innovation — at the speed the market demands.”

Thales is already collaborating on dozens of projects with industrial, automotive, and mobile network partners. Rudin emphasized that the new certification will accelerate eSIM adoption across Thales’ global customer base of over 100 stakeholders, which includes mobile operators, IoT service providers, automotive OEMs, and device manufacturers.

The GSMA eSA certification acts as a globally recognized seal of trust, assuring that the hardware, firmware, OS, and cryptographic components of the eSIM solution meet strict functional and security criteria adopted across the mobile ecosystem.

This latest achievement by Thales is set to strengthen its position as a leader in the secure digital identity and connectivity space, particularly as industries move towards autonomous, data-driven, and hyper-connected environments.

As the IoT ecosystem continues to expand, certifications like GSMA eSA will play a crucial role in ensuring that growth is matched by security, scalability, and end-user confidence.
