The National Bank of Bahrain (NBB) has inaugurated its newly transformed Tier 3 certified Data Centre, marking a major digital milestone and setting a national benchmark in infrastructure excellence. The facility positions NBB as the first and only bank in Bahrain to design, construct, and operate its own data centre that meets the Uptime Institute’s Tier 3 certification, a globally recognised standard for data centre reliability.
The inauguration follows an 18-month infrastructure transformation project, carried out with the support of the Central Bank of Bahrain. The upgrade involved a comprehensive overhaul of legacy systems and eight separate migration phases, enabling the bank to transition its entire digital ecosystem smoothly and securely.
In his remarks, Usman Ahmed, Group CEO of NBB, described the development as a strategic move in strengthening the Bank’s digital foundation:
“The new Data Centre represents NBB’s continued investment in infrastructure that delivers long-term resilience. It strengthens the Bank’s operational backbone while advancing its ESG goals by embedding energy-optimised technology directly into its core infrastructure.”
He added that the transition was designed to be seamless and low-risk, driven by a vision to provide customers with uninterrupted, frictionless digital banking experiences. “Every aspect of this major project was guided by a commitment to providing a stable and secure service environment,” he said.
The facility is engineered for maximum uptime, advanced cybersecurity, and energy efficiency, aligning with international sustainability goals. The Tier 3 certification ensures the centre offers high availability with no more than 1.6 hours of downtime per year — critical for a sector that depends on 24/7 service reliability.
The achievement reflects NBB’s broader strategy to lead digital innovation in Bahrain’s banking sector, reinforcing its status as a forward-thinking financial institution committed to technological advancement and operational excellence.
Beyond infrastructure, the new Data Centre also supports NBB’s Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) goals by integrating energy-saving technologies, further aligning the Bank’s operations with Bahrain’s sustainable development agenda.
With this move, NBB has placed itself at the forefront of digital infrastructure in the region, elevating both its internal operational capabilities and the standard of service it offers to customers.
