The AlMabarrah AlKhalifia Foundation (MKF) has concluded the second edition of its Watheq university preparatory program, designed to prepare Bahraini high school students for the challenges of higher education.
Held under the patronage of H.E. Sara Ahmed Buhij, Chief Executive Officer of the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA), the program ran across July and August 2025. More than 60 students, aged 16 to 18, took part in the initiative.
Organisers said the Watheq program aims to strengthen both academic readiness and personal development, equipping participants with the confidence and skills needed to transition into university life.
This year’s edition was supported by the National Bank of Bahrain (NBB), with further contributions from institutions including the BTEA, the University of Bahrain (UOB), Bahrain Teachers College (BTC), Euro University of Bahrain (EUB), the American University of Bahrain (AUB), and University of Strathclyde Bahrain.
Private and philanthropic organisations such as Beyon, Gulf Petrochemical Industries Co. (BSC), the Rashid Alzayani Foundation, the Al Kooheji Charitable Foundation, Education Zone Bahrain, and Qalam Design Studio also played a role. Expert guidance was provided by Dr. Bedoor Sami Al Omran, Consultant Neuroradiologist at the Bahrain Defense Force Hospital.
Workshops and activities
Students engaged in an extensive lineup of activities, ranging from workshops on self-development and motivation to sessions exploring academic majors and career opportunities. Practical projects, field visits, motivational seminars, and documentary screenings were also included, alongside recreational activities.
The program’s Treasure Hunt Competition served as its signature event, encouraging teamwork and problem-solving in a dynamic environment. At the conclusion, all participants received accredited certificates.
Voices of support
H.H. Shaikha Zain bint Khalid Al Khalifa, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees at MKF, expressed her satisfaction with the outcomes, stressing the importance of partnerships in empowering young Bahrainis.
“The Foundation is determined to continue launching initiatives that enable the younger generation to serve their communities and the nation,” she said, praising the contributions of sponsors and government support.
NBB’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Usman Ahmed, emphasised the bank’s commitment to nurturing human capital in the Kingdom.
“We view it as a core responsibility to support programs that prepare youth to excel academically and enter the workforce with clarity and purpose,” he said. “Our sponsorship of Watheq demonstrates our commitment to helping build the Kingdom’s long-term growth and competitiveness.”

MKF said it would continue developing initiatives aimed at preparing Bahrain’s youth for future success. The Foundation highlighted that programs like Watheq not only enhance academic readiness but also instil values of service, motivation, and personal growth.
