Giorgio Armani, the Italian fashion designer who reshaped global style and built one of the world’s most successful luxury empires, has died at the age of 91.

The Armani Group confirmed his death on Thursday in a statement describing him as its “creator, founder, and tireless driving force”. It said Armani died peacefully in Milan “surrounded by his loved ones.”

Often referred to by colleagues as “Il Signor Armani,” the designer continued working until his final days, despite health concerns that had forced him to cancel appearances earlier this year.

A career that defined an era

Born in Piacenza in 1934, Armani founded his label in Milan in 1975. Within a decade, he became one of the most influential names in fashion, known for clean lines, understated elegance and a style that bridged sophistication with modernity.

His designs dressed Hollywood stars and world leaders alike. Armani is credited with shaping the concept of red carpet fashion, while also broadening his brand through Emporio Armani for younger audiences, as well as ventures into hotels, homeware and fragrance.

Lasting influence

Tributes poured in following the announcement. Italy’s Culture Minister, Alessandro Giuli, hailed Armani as “a leading figure in Italian culture who was able to turn elegance into a universal language.”

“His understated and innovative style redefined the relationship between fashion, cinema, and society, creating a lasting legacy for contemporary culture,” Giuli added.

Armani’s absence from the Paris Armani Privé show earlier this year marked the first time in two decades he did not attend. Despite doctors’ advice to rest, he continued to oversee the event remotely, approving every detail.

Private farewell

The Armani Group confirmed that funeral services will be private. However, members of the public wishing to pay their respects will be able to do so at a funeral home in Milan on Saturday and Sunday.

Armani’s death comes just weeks before celebrations were due to mark the 50th anniversary of his fashion house — a milestone for a brand synonymous with Italian identity, global luxury, and timeless design.
