The Ferrero Group has released its 16th annual Sustainability Report, marking another milestone in the company’s commitment to responsible growth and environmental stewardship. The 2023/2024 fiscal year saw substantial advances in key areas such as supply chain traceability, greenhouse gas reduction, sustainable packaging, and human rights protection.

Executive Chairman Giovanni Ferrero reaffirmed the company’s long-term sustainability strategy, saying, “Sustainability is deeply embedded in Ferrero’s long-term strategy… to source responsibly, innovate boldly, and safeguard the natural world for future generations.”

Supply Chain Transparency Strengthened

Ferrero reported strong progress in traceability across its supply chains, mapping over 90% of key ingredients back to their origins. Strategic collaborations with Sourcemap and Starling helped the company achieve:

  • 97% traceability for cocoa and palm oil
  • 94% traceability for hazelnuts

This enhanced visibility supports Ferrero’s goals of ethical sourcing and environmental accountability.

Emissions Reduction on Track for 2030 Goal

Ferrero has made significant strides towards its 2030 target of halving greenhouse gas emissions from a 2017/18 baseline:

  • Scope 1 and 2 emissions were reduced by 21.7%
  • 90% of electricity used in manufacturing and warehousing came from renewable sources
  • The company disaggregated Scope 3 FLAG (Forest, Land, and Agriculture) and non-FLAG emissions to improve reporting accuracy

CEO Lapo Civiletti highlighted these achievements, stating, “We have successfully advanced our sustainability journey while maintaining strong financial stewardship across the company.”

Packaging and Plastics Innovation

Ferrero maintained its commitment to sustainable packaging, with 92.1% of packaging now recyclable, reusable, or compostable. Key milestones include:

  • A 13% reduction in plastic-to-product ratio
  • Transitioning Ferrero Rocher boxes to polypropylene in North America and China, saving an estimated 11,000 tonnes of plastic
  • Launching Nutella Plant-Based in jars made from 60% recycled glass
  • Rolling out Kinder Joy’s new paper spoon

People, Partnerships and Responsible Consumption

The company continued to make strides in community engagement and product responsibility:

  • All Ferrero plants are now certified against the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) standard
  • 85% of marketed products had a serving size of 130 kcal or less; 63% were 100 kcal or less
  • Ferrero maintained a focus on human rights through partnerships with groups such as the ILO and Save the Children
  • The Kinder Joy of moving initiative reached over 3.7 million children in 35 countries, with more than €13 million invested

In 2024, Ferrero also partnered with the Organization of American States (OAS) to promote inclusion and equity through sports, focusing particularly on women, children, and adolescents in the Americas.

A Measured and Mission-Driven Approach

With these efforts, Ferrero continues to strengthen its position as a sustainability leader in the global food industry. The report reflects a balanced strategy that blends environmental accountability with social responsibility and long-term business resilience.
