Saudi Arabia is mourning the death of veteran actor and writer Hamad Al-Muzaini, who passed away at the age of 80, local media confirmed on Sunday.

While the cause of his death has not been disclosed, his family said they preferred to keep details private, asking the public to remember him for his artistic achievements. Funeral prayers were held at Al-Rajhi Mosque in Riyadh after the afternoon prayer, followed by burial.

A pioneering career

Al-Muzaini was considered one of the pioneers of drama and theatre in Saudi Arabia, with a career spanning decades. He contributed significantly to the development of the Kingdom’s cultural scene, both as a writer and as a performer, and influenced a generation of actors and audiences across the Arab world.

Colleagues and fans alike described him as a cornerstone of Saudi artistic life, admired for his dedication to storytelling and theatre at a time when the performing arts were still finding their footing in the country.

Tributes from the artistic community

News of his death was shared by fellow artist Fayez Al-Maliki, who posted on X:
“Our father and beloved artist Hamad Al-Muzaini has passed away. Funeral prayers will be held at Al-Rajhi Mosque after the afternoon prayer. I ask God Almighty to grant him Paradise. May God reward his family and loved ones greatly. Praise be to God for everything.”

The post sparked a wave of condolences from actors, writers and cultural figures across the Arab world, many of whom remembered Al-Muzaini as both a mentor and a friend.

Legacy remembered

Although his family has chosen not to disclose details surrounding his death, they emphasised that his legacy is what matters most. His work continues to resonate within Saudi Arabia’s rapidly evolving cultural landscape, where theatre, television and film are playing an increasingly central role.

The Ministry of Culture and other institutions are expected to issue formal tributes in the coming days, reflecting the high regard in which Al-Muzaini was held.

For many Saudis, the loss represents the passing of a generation that laid the groundwork for today’s flourishing arts scene.
