Mallorca has reaffirmed its position as a premier global destination by committing to a sustainable model of responsible sport tourism. Known for its privileged climate, diverse landscapes, and high-quality infrastructure, the island is seeking to balance economic growth with environmental and social responsibility.
At the heart of this strategy lies The Pledge—a manifesto for responsible tourism adopted by Mallorca as a guide to building a more conscious, fair, and sustainable approach. The Pledge calls on all stakeholders—government, business, and residents, both permanent and seasonal—to work together to protect Mallorca’s natural, cultural, and social heritage while ensuring quality visitor experiences.
Tourism with responsibility
Sport plays a central role in Mallorca’s tourism offering. From elite competitions such as the Mallorca Championships to year-round amateur activities, sport has become both an economic driver and a tool for spreading the values of sustainable tourism. Events are increasingly used as platforms to raise awareness of the Pledge, reinforcing respect for the island’s resources and traditions.
“The vision is for everyone to feel proud of being part of this journey, treating the island as if it were their own home,” said representatives of the Responsible Tourism Foundation of Mallorca, which is leading the initiative under the Consell de Mallorca.
Public–private partnerships are being strengthened to diversify the local economy, reduce seasonal pressures, and better balance visitor flows. Innovation, digitalisation, and the circular economy are being integrated to reduce environmental impact and safeguard long-term resilience.
A premier sporting hub
Mallorca’s infrastructure is central to its international appeal. The island hosts a PGA Training Academy, more than 700 tennis courts across 60 federated clubs, 24 golf courses, a cycling network covering 2,300 kilometres, five velodromes, and over 1,400 swimming pools. With 452 padel courts and 74 football fields, Mallorca offers world-class facilities that cater to both professional athletes and visitors seeking active holidays.
This breadth of infrastructure allows the island to offer a holistic tourism experience that combines sport with gastronomy, culture, local products, and nature—creating an integrated, high-quality offering that benefits residents and visitors alike.
Securing the future
The Responsible Tourism Foundation’s efforts are designed to ensure Mallorca’s prosperity does not come at the expense of its environment or residents’ quality of life. By promoting year-round activities, the island aims to avoid the negative effects of mass seasonal tourism and instead distribute benefits more evenly across sectors and communities.
Every action, local leaders stress, contributes to preserving Mallorca’s identity and safeguarding its role as both “the best place to live and the best destination to visit.”
Residents, visitors, and businesses are invited to sign the Pledge for Responsible Tourism, signalling their support for a shared commitment to a sustainable future.
