The American University of Ras Al Khaimah (AURAK) has announced a major expansion of its academic and research programmes to align with the emirate’s rapid economic, tourism and investment growth.

Ras Al Khaimah’s transformation is being fuelled by large-scale tourism, hospitality and real estate developments, including the Middle East’s first integrated gaming resort on Al Marjan Island. In 2024, the emirate welcomed 1.28 million visitors, with a target of 3.5 million by 2030. Tourism revenues rose by more than 12%, while Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) visitors increased by 15%.

The growth has been matched by a surge in investor confidence, underlined by Fitch’s upgrade of the emirate’s credit rating from A to A+, and S&P Global’s increase from A-/A-2 to A/A-1 in 2024.

AURAK, which achieved a QS 5 Stars Plus rating in 2023, is positioning itself as a key contributor to Ras Al Khaimah’s future. “Ras Al Khaimah stands at the threshold of a bold new future, powered by a growth strategy that harmonizes the preservation of natural beauty and culture with modern attractions, services, and amenities,” said Dr David Schmidt, President of AURAK. “At AURAK, we are committed to supporting this transformation by enhancing and expanding our academic portfolio—bridging the gap between academia and the dynamic industries propelling RAK’s unprecedented advancement.”

The university is expanding its offerings in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Robotics, Biotechnology, Engineering, and Hospitality and Tourism Management. Artificial Intelligence will be integrated across multiple disciplines, enabling students in Architecture, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, and Civil Engineering to add a Minor in AI to their degrees.

Research and innovation are also being prioritised. Flagship initiatives include the Advanced Technology and Artificial Intelligence Center (ATAIC), the AURAK Center for Entrepreneurship (ACE), and the RAK Research and Innovation Center, a specialist facility in alternative energy and solar technology.

Industry alignment remains a central focus. During AURAK Career Week 2025, 32 companies attended to offer job and internship opportunities to students and graduates. The university is building stronger links with both public and private sector organisations to respond to the influx of new businesses and government projects.

Ras Al Khaimah’s diversified economy, with manufacturing accounting for 27% of GDP, is complemented by a growing portfolio of adventure tourism experiences. Attractions include the world’s longest zipline, Jais Flight; the Bear Grylls Explorers Camp; Jais Wings, the region’s first dedicated paragliding site; and a new Via Ferrata climbing route.

The upcoming $5.1 billion Wynn Al Marjan Island resort, due to open in 2027, is among the most high-profile developments set to drive future growth. Officials expect these projects to further boost employment, investment and educational opportunities in the emirate.

By aligning its academic strategy with Ras Al Khaimah’s growth trajectory, AURAK aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in one of the region’s fastest-growing economies.
