Canon will once again spotlight the power of photojournalism at the 36th edition of the Visa pour l’Image festival in Perpignan this September. Held annually in the south of France, the festival is one of the world’s most prestigious platforms for documentary photography. Canon’s longstanding partnership with the event continues this year with project grants, exhibitions, and technical support for professionals.
From September 1 to 6, the festival’s Pro Week will see Canon honour two outstanding photographers, support professional development, and host an exclusive exhibit in collaboration with Reuters.
Two Grants for Documentary Excellence
Canon and Visa pour l’Image are awarding two major grants to celebrate bold, independent storytelling. The Canon Female Photojournalist Grant, valued at €8,000, has been awarded to Marion Péhée, a French photojournalist. Her project revisits young Ukrainians she met a decade ago, exploring their lives in a region shaped by conflict. The grant will support her ongoing documentation of adolescence and resilience on the frontline.
Alongside this, the Canon Video Grant goes to Shiho Fukada, a Japanese photojournalist and filmmaker. Her short-film documentary project, Echoes of Little Tokyo, focuses on the Fukui Mortuary in Los Angeles — a Japanese-American family funeral home that has served the Little Tokyo community since 1918. The film reflects on generational traditions and the challenges of preserving cultural identity amid urban change.
“In both projects, we saw a remarkable depth of emotion and a sustained dedication to powerful narratives,” said Ingrid Masachs, EMEA Marketing Director at Canon. “These stories resonate with wider themes of war, displacement, and community endurance.”
Reuters Exhibition: 40 Years of History
A highlight of Canon’s presence this year is an exclusive exhibition of images from Reuters’ upcoming book, In the Moment. The collection, to be released in October 2025, spans four decades of iconic photojournalism.
From major political upheavals to intimate human stories, the exhibition provides a striking visual timeline of world events. Canon is printing and presenting the images at the Palais des Congrès, offering visitors a rare look into the history of a global news agency.
Supporting the Professional Community
Canon will also provide hands-on support to accredited photographers throughout the festival. Its Canon Professional Services (CPS) team will offer free camera maintenance, cleaning services, and technical guidance. Photographers can test the latest Canon gear and print their work on-site using Canon’s fine art printers.
As the festival draws global professionals to Perpignan, Canon’s involvement reaffirms its commitment to fostering excellence, innovation, and community in the field of visual storytelling.
