Drydocks World, part of Dubai-based DP World, has secured a landmark Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract to deliver the world’s largest Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) facility.
The deal was awarded by AMIGO LNG, a joint venture between Texas-based Epcilon LNG LLC and Singapore’s LNG Alliance Pte Ltd. The project is set to transform Mexico’s role in the global LNG market by creating a major new export hub on the Pacific coast.
Record-breaking project
The development will include the conversion of two LNG carriers into Floating Storage Units (FSUs) and the construction of two newbuild FLNG barges at Drydocks World’s Dubai yard. Once operational in the second half of 2028, the four-vessel facility will provide more than 4.2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of liquefaction capacity, surpassing all existing floating LNG projects worldwide.
The facility will be located off Guaymas, Sonora, on Mexico’s west coast. Supplied with natural gas from the US Permian Basin, the project will allow Mexico to export LNG directly to Asia and Latin America, offering an alternative to the longer routes from the US Gulf Coast. Industry analysts say the shorter shipping distances could cut both costs and emissions, opening a new LNG corridor at a time when global energy security remains a pressing concern.
Strategic milestone for Dubai
Capt. Rado Antolovic, PhD, CEO of Drydocks World, described the contract as a milestone for both the company and Dubai’s maritime sector.
“This contract represents a major milestone for Drydocks World and Dubai. With our expertise in complex offshore conversions and large-scale new builds, we are setting new global benchmarks for floating LNG solutions,” he said. “At the same time, this project reinforces Dubai’s position as a hub for advanced maritime engineering that powers global trade and the energy transition.”
The project will be executed using a modular build strategy, enabling precise fabrication, seamless system integration, and pre-commissioning in a controlled environment. Drydocks World said the approach would ensure shorter delivery schedules, rigorous quality control, and reduced environmental impact.
Partnership with LNG Alliance
Dr. Muthu Chezhian, CEO of LNG Alliance, emphasised the significance of partnering with Dubai’s shipbuilding giant.
“By partnering with Drydocks World on the world’s largest FLNG facility, we are securing best-in-class quality, exceptional production capacity, and reliable long-term performance of this critical asset,” he said. “We are also harnessing the key advantages of FLNG solutions — from faster project schedules to rigorous testing and substantial environmental benefits.”
Track record in LNG
Drydocks World has previously completed more than 10 major LNG and Floating Storage Regasification Unit (FSRU) conversions, building a strong track record in the sector.
Industry observers note that as LNG continues to play a central role in the global energy transition, floating solutions such as FLNG are becoming increasingly important. With its scale and strategic positioning, the AMIGO LNG project could set new standards for the industry and further strengthen Dubai’s role in advanced maritime engineering.
