UAE-based telecom and digital services provider du has taken a major step toward advancing smart urban infrastructure through a strategic visit to China Mobile International (CMI) and China Mobile Shanghai. The visit, focused on exploring 5G-powered metro digitization, forms part of du’s broader commitment to reimagining urban mobility and digital innovation in the UAE.

The delegation, led by CEO Fahad Al Hassawi, also visited the Shanghai Shentong Metro Group, operator of the world’s largest metro system with more than 896 kilometres of operational track. During the tour of People’s Square Station—a central hub serving up to 1.5 million passengers per day—the team witnessed first-hand how 5G Advanced networks, AI, and real-time data systems are revolutionising transit operations.

“Our recent visit with China Mobile International, China Mobile Shanghai, and Shanghai Shentong Metro Group is a step forward in our journey towards digital transformation,” said Al Hassawi.
“This inspiring exchange has laid the foundation for future collaboration, aligning with the UAE’s national vision and reinforcing our role in shaping the smart cities of tomorrow.”

Key innovations on display included:

  • 5G Public-Private Network (PPN) model, replacing legacy wireless systems to deliver greater scalability and cost efficiency
  • “One Line One Net” configuration, supported by AI-based “tide slice” technology, which dynamically adjusts network bandwidth during peak hours
  • Compact solutions such as Small XAU devices, transparent antennas, and 5G-enabled Set-Top Boxes, all aimed at enhancing coverage while reducing infrastructure demands

These technologies are not only improving metro operations but are also enabling predictive congestion management and real-time positioning systems, contributing to smoother, safer passenger journeys. The implementation of 5G also brings a 40-fold increase in consumer downlink speeds, with corresponding uplink benefits that are particularly valuable for industrial IoT applications.

The visit culminated in a strategic dialogue between du, CMI, China Mobile Shanghai, and Shanghai Shentong Metro Group, with strong mutual interest expressed in pursuing scalable, sustainable partnerships to support next-generation mobility solutions in the UAE.

As part of its digital transformation mandate, du is actively seeking to import best practices and cutting-edge technologies that can be localised for the UAE’s urban infrastructure. The company sees immense potential in leveraging advanced 5G ecosystems to enhance public transportation, optimise operations, and improve overall citizen experiences.

This latest initiative underscores du’s role as a technology enabler and smart infrastructure partner, committed to supporting the UAE’s ambitions as a global leader in digital innovation and future-ready urban planning.
