The Dubai Culture and Arts Authority has launched a year-long cultural activation in the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, aiming to celebrate the UAE’s heritage and reintroduce the district as a vibrant cultural destination for residents and tourists alike.
Running until the end of December, the programme offers a diverse calendar of events, including panel discussions, interactive workshops, live demonstrations, and family-focused heritage experiences. It forms part of Dubai Culture’s broader mission to preserve and promote the emirate’s tangible and intangible cultural legacy.
A cornerstone of the initiative is the ‘Family Workshops’ series, designed to engage younger audiences in the preservation of Emirati traditions. These hands-on sessions take place on the first Saturday of each month, with standout events including:
- ‘Doors of Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood’ (28 June) – a visual exploration of traditional architectural details.
- ‘Barajeel and the Magic Brush’ (5 July) – a seminar on wind towers and artistic expression.
- ‘Al Fahidi-Inspired Bookmarks’ (2 August) – a creative craft class for children.
The ‘Live Demonstrations of Emirati Crafts’ series, led by experts from the Turath Centre for Traditional Handicrafts, deepens the experience with authentic sessions revealing the tools, stories, and skills behind time-honoured practices. Notable highlights include:
- Gargoor-Making Workshop (12 July) – showcasing traditional fishing cage weaving.
- The Palm Tree… A Legend of Tales (16 July) – an exploration of palm tree lore and its cultural significance.
- Safafa (palm frond weaving) and Burqa Sewing Workshops – scheduled throughout August.
“Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood is one of Dubai’s most important cultural landmarks,” said Mariam Al Tamimi, Acting Director of the Heritage Sites Department at Dubai Culture.
“Our programme reinforces national identity and highlights Dubai Culture’s commitment to safeguarding heritage while inspiring younger generations to preserve and evolve traditional practices.”
Al Tamimi added that the programming aligns with Dubai’s broader cultural vision—to create sustainable and engaging experiences that unite history with innovation. The initiative aims to boost community participation, stimulate cultural tourism, and educate future custodians of heritage through accessible and immersive activities.
Located in the heart of old Dubai, Al Fahidi is renowned for its narrow alleys, wind towers, and sand-coloured courtyards. The new programming breathes life into this historic district, encouraging exploration while connecting the past with the present.
Visitors and residents are invited to take part in the events throughout the year. Full schedules and registration details can be accessed via Dubai Culture’s official platforms.
