The National Youth Orchestra of Dubai (NYO–Dubai) made history this week by becoming the first orchestra from the UAE to perform at New York’s iconic Carnegie Hall, a momentous achievement supported by the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority.
The landmark performance, funded under the Dubai Cultural Grant programme as part of the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy, highlights the emirate’s growing global stature in the creative arts and its commitment to fostering young musical talent.
Comprising 70 young musicians from diverse backgrounds, the ensemble captivated the audience with a powerful performance that culminated in the world premiere of “Ensemble of Peace” by acclaimed Emirati composer Ihab Darwish. The piece was warmly received, representing a strong blend of cultural storytelling and orchestral innovation.
The Dubai Culture delegation accompanying NYO–Dubai included Hala Badri, Director General of Dubai Culture; Shaima Rashed Al Suwaidi, CEO of the Arts, Design & Literature Sector; and Sara Al-Pachachi, Acting Director of Marketing & Corporate Communications. The orchestra was led by Artistic Director Amira Fouad and Conductor Jonathan Winter Barrett.
A Cultural Exchange Through Music
Ahead of the performance, the delegation took part in an immersive cultural programme across New York City. Highlights included tours of Juilliard School, Steinway & Sons, and a masterclass with Helen Cha-Pyo, Artistic Director of the Wharton Institute for the Performing Arts and Principal Conductor of the New Jersey Youth Symphony. These experiences allowed the young musicians to engage with top-tier music professionals and institutions.
The delegation also met with Redha Benabdullah, Business Development Lead for Steinway & Sons in the UAE, and Eric Feidner, Chief Innovation Officer at Steinway & Sons and the inventor of Spirio, to discuss future collaborations and education-focused partnerships.
In her remarks, H.E. Hala Badri described the performance as a powerful symbol of Dubai’s vision to be a “global centre for culture, an incubator for creativity, and a thriving hub for talent.” She emphasized the role of NYO–Dubai in building international bridges and supporting the Dubai Orchestra project, launched recently as part of a wider cultural strategy.
A Proud Milestone
Amira Fouad, co-founder and Artistic Director of NYO–Dubai, called the event “a true tribute to the dedication and talent of our members.” She added: “This performance reflects seven years of passion and commitment. It’s not just the culmination of their hard work but also the beginning of an exciting new partnership with Dubai Culture.”
The concert at Carnegie Hall, one of the most prestigious classical music venues in the world, marks a significant moment in the UAE’s cultural journey—placing its youth and artistry on the global stage.
