British actor Warwick Davis will reprise his role as Professor Filius Flitwick in HBO’s highly anticipated Harry Potter television adaptation.
The multi-award-winning actor, best known for portraying the Charms professor in the original film series based on J.K. Rowling’s novels, is the first returning cast member confirmed for the new project.
Davis also played Griphook the goblin in the films, but that role will now be taken on by actor Leigh Gill, known for Joker and its sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux.
The announcement was made as part of the annual Back to Hogwarts celebration on September 1, a date when fans traditionally mark the fictional return of students to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Alongside Davis, new cast members were revealed. Elijah Oshin joins as Dean Thomas, Harry’s classmate, while Finn Stephens and William Nash will portray Crabbe and Goyle, the companions of Draco Malfoy.
The series is expected to be an expansive, decade-long production, with the first season due to premiere in 2027. Filming is already underway at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in Hertfordshire, the same location where all eight Harry Potter films were shot.
A first look at lead actor Dominic McLaughlin, aged 11, was released earlier this summer, confirming his role as Harry Potter.
Additional casting includes Sirine Saba as Professor Sprout, Richard Durden as ghostly history teacher Professor Binns, and Brid Brennan as Madam Pomfrey. Major roles have also been filled by internationally recognised actors: John Lithgow will play Albus Dumbledore, Nick Frost will portray Rubeus Hagrid, Janet McTeer steps into the role of Professor McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedu takes on Severus Snape.
HBO has previously described the show as “a faithful adaptation of the iconic books.” Unlike the film franchise, which condensed storylines, the television format is expected to allow more time for detail and character development.
Fans and critics alike will be watching closely as the project develops. With Warwick Davis’s return, the series bridges the world of the original films with a new generation of performers, while aiming to reintroduce the Wizarding World to audiences in a longer and more expansive form.
