The death toll from a suspected case of methyl alcohol (methanol) poisoning in Jordan has risen to nine, with 17 total infections, according to a statement issued Monday by the Public Security Directorate.
Authorities said that all patients are currently receiving treatment, and investigations into the source of the contaminated alcohol are ongoing.
The incident has raised public health concerns across the country, particularly in the city of Zarqa, where several of the cases were first reported. The victims reportedly consumed alcohol laced with methanol, a highly toxic substance often used industrially and not fit for human consumption.
Dr. Imad Abu Yaqeen, Director of Technical Affairs at the Ministry of Health, confirmed that more than 15 cases of alcohol poisoning were admitted to hospitals on Sunday.
“The conditions of the patients range from critical to very serious,” he said.
Yaqeen added that Zarqa Government Hospital received three individuals displaying symptoms commonly associated with toxic methanol exposure, such as elevated blood acidity and neurological impairment. Medical teams quickly identified the signs of poisoning and began emergency interventions.
Methanol poisoning can lead to blindness, organ failure, and death, particularly when consumed in unregulated or counterfeit alcohol products. Initial symptoms can include headache, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting, followed by seizures, coma, or death if untreated.
The Ministry of Health has not yet disclosed the source of the contaminated alcohol, but officials have reiterated warnings against the consumption of illegally manufactured or unlicensed alcoholic products.
Public Security forces are working in coordination with health officials to trace the origin and distribution chain of the tainted alcohol. Raids and seizures of suspicious supplies are reportedly underway.
This is not the first time Jordan has witnessed methanol poisoning cases linked to illicit alcohol. Authorities are calling for stronger public awareness, tighter enforcement, and harsher penalties for illegal alcohol production and distribution.
Residents have been urged to seek immediate medical help if they or someone they know experiences symptoms after alcohol consumption.
The government said updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
