Maldives Resort Hosts Yoga Retreat for Int’l Yoga Day

InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort is celebrating International Yoga Day with a five-day immersive retreat from June 20th to 24th, offering guests a chance to realign body and mind amid the tranquil beauty of the Indian Ocean.

Set against the pristine backdrop of Raa Atoll, the retreat is led by Dubai-based yoga instructor Emilia Métaireau, a seasoned teacher with over a decade of experience and more than 2,500 hours of global practice. Métaireau brings a blend of ancient yogic tradition and modern mindfulness techniques to create what the resort calls a “soul-stirring” experience.

Timed to coincide with the June 21st observance of International Yoga Day, the retreat is curated around the five koshas — a yogic concept referring to the five layers of human existence: physical, energetic, mental, intellectual, and blissful. Each day is dedicated to one kosha, guiding participants through sunrise flows, sunset meditations, breathwork, and stillness practices.

The opening session on June 20th invites guests to “awaken to the body” through a dynamic vinyasa flow. The following day, in honour of Yoga Day, participants are introduced to the energy body through yin yoga and yoga nidra, encouraging deep rest and rebalancing. The mid-point of the retreat delves into calming the mind and igniting inner clarity, while the penultimate session centres on accessing the bliss body through a two-hour immersive movement practice.

The retreat concludes on June 24th with a reflective practice that integrates all five koshas, aimed at helping guests leave the island with a renewed sense of wholeness and vitality.

All sessions are held in the serene surroundings of AVI Spa, the resort’s signature overwater wellness sanctuary. Named after the Dhivehi word for “sunshine,” AVI Spa also offers guests a range of holistic treatments designed to support the transformative journey.

“We’ve designed this retreat to be more than a getaway—it’s an inward journey to reconnect with the most authentic parts of yourself,” Métaireau said. “With the five koshas as our guide, guests will explore their inner world through movement, stillness, breath and awareness.”

Located on the southern tip of Raa Atoll, on the edge of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and adjacent to a manta ray aggregation site, InterContinental Maldives is known for its secluded luxury. As the region’s first all-Club InterContinental resort, it offers an adults-only area, six dining venues, and 81 villas—many perched over water.

With travel to wellness destinations on the rise globally, this curated retreat highlights the Maldives’ growing appeal not just as a honeymoon destination, but also as a sanctuary for mindful escapes.
