Vnukovo International Airport has officially welcomed the inaugural direct flight between Moscow and Riyadh, operated by Flynas, a leading Saudi low-cost carrier. The new route marks a significant milestone in strengthening air connectivity between Russia and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, with far-reaching implications for tourism, business, and cultural relations.
The launch ceremony, held at Vnukovo, was attended by aviation officials, diplomats, and representatives from both countries. The event celebrated not only the expansion of Flynas’ international network but also a deepening of bilateral cooperation.
“This is more than just a new flight — it’s a new gateway for opportunity,” said Evgeny Kozlov, Chairman of the Moscow City Tourism Committee. “We are witnessing a remarkable rise in Saudi interest in Moscow, and this connection will make it even easier for travelers to experience our city’s rich cultural heritage and modern attractions.”
According to the Moscow City Tourism Committee, the number of Saudi visitors to the Russian capital has grown 5.7 times in just one year. In 2024 alone, 52,400 guests from the Kingdom arrived in Moscow, a sharp increase from 2023. Officials attribute this growth to Moscow’s active tourism outreach in the Middle East, including a series of promotional campaigns and strategic business meetings in Riyadh and Jeddah.
The new Flynas route is expected to further accelerate this trend by offering Saudi travelers a direct and convenient option for leisure, pilgrimage, or business travel. It also provides Moscow residents with easier access to the Kingdom and broader Middle East.
In line with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which aims to diversify its economy and promote cultural exchange, Moscow has adapted its tourism offerings to cater to Middle Eastern guests. Dozens of hotels now feature halal food menus, prayer spaces, and services aligned with Islamic hospitality standards. A curated guide lists more than 30 halal-friendly restaurants in the city, and various initiatives are underway to further enhance the visitor experience.
Flynas, recognised as one of the Middle East’s most innovative low-cost airlines, operates the new route with a focus on affordability and comfort. The airline’s entry into the Russian market comes amid rising demand for travel between the two countries.
Tourism analysts believe the route could contribute significantly to both economies, not just through increased tourism but also by enabling stronger trade and investment ties. As travel restrictions continue to ease and demand rebounds, direct flights are expected to play a central role in global recovery efforts.
As the first passengers disembarked in Moscow, they were welcomed with traditional Russian hospitality and cultural performances — a symbolic start to what both nations hope will be a lasting connection.
With world-class infrastructure, vibrant arts, and a growing awareness of cultural sensitivities, Moscow is positioning itself as an increasingly attractive destination for travelers from the Gulf region.
