Ooredoo has officially launched the Salalah Data Centre and Submarine Cable Landing Station, a major project aimed at transforming Oman into one of the region’s most important digital gateways.
Located in the Dhofar region, Salalah is strategically placed at the crossroads of Asia, Europe and Africa, offering direct access to multiple global subsea cable systems. The new facility is the first in southern Oman to combine a Tier III–compliant data centre with a submarine cable landing station, making it a landmark for the nation’s digital infrastructure.
Boost for cloud and AI services
The Salalah hub has been designed to support the next wave of cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and edge services. It launches with capacity for 125 full server racks and is set to expand to 500 in phases, establishing a benchmark for scalability and digital readiness in the Sultanate.
Saed Al Ghafri, Ooredoo’s Director of Infrastructure, said the project would be a cornerstone for Oman’s digital transformation.
“The Salalah Data Centre and Landing Station is a catalyst for Oman’s digital future,” he said. “By creating a southern gateway for international connectivity, we are strengthening Oman’s position as a regional leader in the digital economy and unlocking long-term value for businesses, communities and the wider region.”
Gateway for global connectivity
By offering a secure landing point for international subsea cables, the facility will provide greater network resilience, reduce latency and deliver faster, more reliable connections. This is expected to draw interest from global operators, hyperscalers and cloud providers looking to expand their presence in the Gulf.
The hub will also create economic benefits at home, including job opportunities and investment inflows, while supporting Oman’s ambition to diversify its economy through digital innovation.
Supporting enterprises and governments
The facility’s advanced design means it can host a wide spectrum of services, from enterprise IT and cloud hosting to advanced content delivery. Businesses and government organisations across the region will benefit from faster, more secure and locally hosted services, reducing reliance on overseas infrastructure.
In addition, the Salalah hub will integrate with Ooredoo’s wider regional network. Other operating companies within the group will be able to route traffic through the facility, share infrastructure and host cloud platforms, creating new synergies and extending Ooredoo’s international digital footprint.
Vision 2040 in focus
The launch of the Salalah Data Centre and Cable Landing Station is seen as a milestone for Oman Vision 2040, the national strategy that prioritises digital transformation and economic diversification.
With its integrated approach, future-ready design and prime geographical location, the facility underscores Ooredoo’s role in advancing innovation, resilience and customer-centric services in Oman’s digital economy.
