Populous, the internationally acclaimed architecture firm best known for its design of sports and entertainment venues, has announced the acquisition of Denver-based Fentress Architects. The move aims to significantly broaden Populous’ capabilities in aviation, transportation, and civic design.
The deal will see Fentress Architects rebranded as Fentress Studios, a Populous Company, with offices remaining in Denver and Washington D.C. The acquisition is part of Populous’ strategy to strengthen its global presence and diversify its portfolio beyond stadiums and arenas.
“This is about expanding the breadth and depth of our practice,” said Bruce Miller, Global Chair and CEO of Populous. “Fentress Architects is widely respected for its visionary work in aviation and public sector design. Together, we are uniting two legacies of design excellence, rooted in innovation and focused on creating people-centric spaces.”
Founded in 1980, Fentress Architects has delivered more than $52 billion in architecture projects across the globe. The firm’s portfolio includes some of the world’s most recognisable transportation and civic landmarks, such as Denver International Airport, Incheon International Airport in South Korea, the Miami Beach Convention Center, and the National Museum of the Marine Corps.
Curt Fentress, Founder and Principal in Charge of Design at Fentress Architects, said the partnership reflects a shared commitment to design that serves people and communities. “Populous shares our core values of excellence and innovation,” he said. “This collaboration allows us to elevate our impact and redefine the possibilities of architecture in the public realm.”
The new Fentress Studios division will be integrated into Populous’ aviation and transportation division. According to the firm, this will lead to new opportunities for collaboration on large-scale infrastructure projects, particularly in rapidly urbanising regions.
Populous, which has delivered more than 3,500 projects valued at over $60 billion in the last four decades, sees the acquisition as a key move in extending its influence in new markets. The firm operates in 32 offices across four continents and offers services in architecture, urban planning, interior design, wayfinding, event planning, and sustainable consulting.
Both firms have emphasised that the merger is grounded in a mutual vision for the future of architecture — one that prioritises human experience, sustainability, and social impact. With the integration of Fentress’ award-winning design legacy and Populous’ global infrastructure, the combined entity hopes to push the boundaries of civic and cultural architecture on an international scale.
“This isn’t just an expansion of services,” Miller added. “It’s a deepening of purpose and the beginning of a new chapter in people-focused design.”
