Tsinghua University, one of China’s most prestigious academic institutions, has officially launched the Hazem Ben-Gacem Arab Scholars Program, a new initiative aimed at strengthening educational and cultural ties between China and Arab League countries.

The launch ceremony, held on Thursday, 26 June at Tsinghua’s campus in Beijing, brought together ambassadors, dignitaries, and academic leaders from across the Arab world and China. The scholarship will support up to 15 students each year from Arab League nations pursuing postgraduate education in China.

The inaugural cohort includes six students, making it the first-ever scholarship at Tsinghua University dedicated to Arab nationals. The program aims to foster cross-cultural dialogue, academic excellence, and long-term collaboration between China and the Arab world.

Bridging Civilisations Through Education

The scholarship was made possible by a significant endowment from Hazem Ben-Gacem, Founder and CEO of BlueFive Capital, who addressed the gathering with a message highlighting the historical and modern relevance of China-Arab collaboration.

“For more than a thousand years, the Arab region and China have been bound by a vibrant exchange of goods, knowledge, and cultural dialogue,” said Ben-Gacem.

“By enabling exceptional Arab students to study at Tsinghua, we aim to develop leaders who will carry forward this agelong spirit of curiosity and collaboration. This program reflects a vision for cooperation in an increasingly fragmented world.”

A New Chapter in Sino-Arab Engagement

Professor Yang Bin, Vice Chancellor of Tsinghua University Council, praised the initiative as a reflection of the university’s commitment to global education and cultural inclusivity.

“Tsinghua has made significant progress in deepening engagement with Arab League member states,” said Professor Yang. “This program not only motivates students to strive for academic excellence but also serves as a milestone in building lasting friendships between our regions.”

He further noted that the scholarship reflects the values of openness, mutual respect, and shared progress, values that lie at the core of the university’s global development strategy.

Tsinghua: A Global Academic Powerhouse

Established in 1911, Tsinghua University is regularly ranked among the top universities globally, particularly in science, engineering, and technology. Often referred to as the “MIT of China,” the university is known for its rigorous academic standards and influential alumni in politics, business, and technology.

The Hazem Ben-Gacem Arab Scholars Program adds to Tsinghua’s growing list of global partnerships and international initiatives and is seen as a key step toward strengthening soft diplomacy and educational exchanges between China and the Arab world.

As globalisation evolves, programs like this underscore the role of education in fostering international understanding and cultural exchange, preparing future leaders to bridge diverse communities and shared global challenges.
