Ready, steady, cook! |
Get your children cooking up a storm in the kitchen ... Every Saturday in the Kid’s Club at the Al Raha Beach hotel, young wannabe master chefs can get creative in the kitchen and take home a recipe for all the family to enjoy. We sent along Abu Dhabi Week reader Victoria Crick with her son Tom and some of his friends to try out Al Raha Beach hotel’s popular Saturday kid’s cookery class Mixing, kneading, rolling and baking chocolate chip and nut cookies filled our Saturday morning at the Al Raha Beach Hotel’s Children’s Cookery Class with chef Kalem and his team. Tom is a huge cooking fan so he was very excited about the class. All the ingredients were pre-prepared and laid out in handily-sized ceramic dishes on miniature tables and chairs. It was relatively easy to follow the chef’s instructions – although the age group of children there meant mums and dads needed to assist, rather than just relax with the coffee and croissants on offer! Each child is given a chef’s hat and an apron which they can take-away at the end of the class, and they all receive little chef’s badges too. The class is a great idea for younger children, but Tom’s friend (aged 12) was probably a bit old for the morning – and the tot-sized tables and chairs make it awkward for anyone over the age of seven to sit and make the cookies. The session lasted just over an hour, when the cookies were created by each child and then whisked off by the chef to be finished in the kitchen. Meanwhile the children are left to entertain themselves, with the helpers in the Children’s Club – again, this is fine for younger children, but anyone over the age of seven may feel awkward or left out. We all enjoyed a lovely morning – and the cookies were delicious! We’d go again ... but we’ll be careful which friends we take along. Younger children will definitely enjoy the experience, but older ones would probably rather do something with friends their own age. [Victoria Crick]
