Dir. Joe Wright, starring Kiera Knightley, Jude Law, Aaron Taylor-Johnson
As far as love stories go, the plot of Anna Karenina is based on the age-old story of being tied to the wrong person; Anna, an aristocrat, is trapped in a loveless marriage to the powerful St. Petersburg diplomat Alexei Alexandrovich Karenin, her son is the only source of happiness in her life. Anna meets young Count Vronsky and falls desperately in love. What’s a girl to do?
What make this period drama stand out from the others is the stunning costumes, artsy ‘theatre-like’ stage and shot transitions, and elaborate dance scenes. Although the British accents seem out of place at times, as usual Knightley pulls off her role as Anna with finesse and credibility.
Be transported back to 19th Century Tsarist Russia as Leo Tolystoy’s novel comes to life in this tale of love and betrayal.
