Visiting the Shangri-La is always a luxurious experience, so with great expectations we headed to Shang Palace, the hotel’s Chinese restaurant, to explore the menu.
Walking through the indoor seating area we take in the beauty of the décor, but it’s an outside table for us, with a view of the Grand Mosque.
The weather is perfect – a slight breeze curling through the air and families walking by add to the relaxed vibe. After ordering a beverage we scan the menu – it all sounds so good that we don’t know what to choose!
We start with dumplings – steamed chicken and scallop for us, steamed shrimp for our companion. The little parcels are delicious and moist, but be warned, a full order is eight pieces, so if you want to save room for your main course opt for a half serving.
Sipping on a grape beverage from the shores of New Zealand, we move on to our main meal. The crispy duck sounds too good to miss, while our companion opts for a spicy Sichuan scallop and broccoli dish. There’s not a lot of conversation at this point of the evening, we’re too busy enjoying the simple pleasures of our perfectly cooked meal.
Not sure we can eat any more, we decide to take a chance and order dessert. The mango pudding is a smooth, fresh and fruity end to the meal, and the deep fried banana balls with bean paste and ice cream are an unexpected delight.
Another unexpected but welcome treat is the cultural performance inside the restaurant. A dancer in traditional Chinese garb performs an elaborate mask dance as the crowd ohs and ahs at the quick-changing masks.
Shang Palace keeps to the luxurious theme of the Shangri-La, but is not ostentatious or snooty. Perfect for couples or friends on a night out, you’ll find fresh, tasty food, great service and a real feeling of culture. We’ll be back sooner rather than later!
