A tribute to rock

There’s a new band in town, and   has a feeling they’re not going to be shy about making themselves heard.

White Rabbit, a lively band of five from South Africa will be making themselves comfortable at PJ O’Reilly’s at Le Royal Méridien hotel until Ramadan this year, styling themselves as a tribute band “with aboriginal influences” in order to keep the crowd entertained.

The popular night spot – themed around a typical Irish local – might seem a rather unusual choice of stage, but the band tell us the atmosphere is just perfect.

“There’s a really fun, relaxed and intimate atmosphere here, perfect for connecting with the crowd,” says Johan du Plooy, the super smiley and friendly lead vocalist and guitarist.

“We like to please the crowd,” he adds. “The venue is perfect and we get a really good vibe from such a personal space; we want people to see it as an extension of their living room – and not be afraid to get up and dance!”

So how do they aim to please? “We class ourselves as radio music,” says drummer Martin Jacobs. “We like our audience to be able to know every word and sing along – and of course we happily take requests!”
he adds.

With rather glamorous front lady Melissa Smit heading up the vocals, the group will happily belt out anything from the rather predictable Eagles classic ‘Hotel California’ to decidedly more rock and metal sounds like Guns ‘N Roses, Metallica, Nirvana and ACDC.

“We do have quite a classic rock sound and edge to us,” Melissa agrees. “Although that doesn’t stop people from requesting the odd Justin Beiber track!” the self-confessed Lady Gaga fan laughs.

The band, who first came to Abu Dhabi in 2007 are extremely excited to be back in the capital with their familiar, loyal and friendly audience.

“Abu Dhabi people certainly know how to have a good night,” says the group’s bass player, Louis Pretorius.

“With us, you’ll definitely have a good night; don’t expect to go home early!” adds Johan with a smile.

White Rabbit perform every night except Sunday at PJ O’Reilly’s at Le Royal Méridien. For info call 02 671 0000.
