A theatrical first for Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi’s very first grassroots theatre group is gearing up to showcase a unique adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s classic play, The Seagull.

On 27th, 29th and 30th April, The Seagull will run at The Village Gardens at OnetoOne hotel, telling four different stories of what it means to be in love through the voices of four very different characters.

The performance by Resuscitation

Theatre is the brainchild of artistic director Maggie Hannan.

“This play is for modern audiences who enjoy contemporary interpretations of classic theatre,” she said.
Resuscitation Theatre’s signature style engages the audience through vibrant and unusual use of physical movement, space and lighting.

“The Seagull is unlike any performance ever done here in Abu Dhabi before,” said Zena Ibrahim, one of the four actors performing in The Seagull.

“It’s a completely original adaptation; it’s not just about acting, it’s the lighting too. All the actors will use lighting to display their emotions. It’s a very physical theatre experience for us and the audience,” she added.

Ibrahim, who was raised in Abu Dhabi, plays Irina Nikolayevna Arkadina, a famous Russian actress. Her character’s son is in love with a beautiful young woman, but he’s not alone in sharing his affections, as Arkadina’s lover is also in love with the beautiful younger woman.

“I auditioned for both female roles but fell in love with my character. She loves her son, but she doesn’t love the fact he’s 25, which gives away her age. She’s melodramatic and great fun to play,” said Ibrahim.

“We’re all very excited to be in this play. There’s a really great chemistry between all the actors and we’re all been swept away with Maggie’s insatiable enthusiasm and support for theatre in Abu Dhabi.”

Tickets are priced AED 50 and are available to purchase from the OnetoOne hotel reception.
